Apple to launch touchscreen MacBook Pro and more on October 27: report

Oct 11, 2026  Twila Rosenbaum 17 views

Apple is reportedly preparing to hold its second major product launch of October, with a new report indicating that the company plans to unveil its first touchscreen MacBook Pro models, a refreshed iPad mini, and other hardware on or around Tuesday, October 27. The event is said to include an online video presentation and an in-person component for members of the press, mirroring the hybrid format Apple has used for several recent product introductions.

The news arrives shortly after Apple announced a separate Welcome home special event for next week. That earlier event is expected to focus on other products, but the late-October launch is shaping up to be the more significant of the two for professional users. According to the report, the October 27 presentation will be geared toward creative professionals who work in video production, photo editing, and music production, suggesting that Apple plans to emphasize performance, display quality, and workflow improvements.

What Apple Is Expected to Announce on October 27

The product lineup reportedly includes three main categories: high-end MacBook Pro models, a new iPad mini, and refreshed desktop and entry-level laptop options. The most anticipated item is the first touchscreen MacBook Pro. For years, Apple resisted adding touchscreens to the Mac, arguing that the iPad was the better platform for direct manipulation. If the report is accurate, that long-standing separation may finally begin to blur.

  • 14-inch and 16-inch touchscreen MacBook Pro models: These machines are expected to feature OLED displays, a Dynamic Island for the first time on a Mac, and a significantly lighter design. They are said to be powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.
  • A new iPad mini: The compact tablet is expected to gain an OLED screen, a relocated FaceTime camera, and a revamped speaker system.
  • New iMac and entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro: Both are expected to run on the M6 chip and look like their current versions, indicating a spec-focused refresh rather than a redesign.

The report describes the launch as similar in scope to Apple's October 2024 Mac event, which included hands-on time for select press in Los Angeles. That event focused on the first M4-powered Macs and marked a return to in-person briefings for the company after several years of pre-recorded virtual presentations. The October 27 event is said to follow a similar playbook, combining a polished online video with a physical press component.

First Touchscreen MacBook Pro: A Defining Moment for the Mac

A touchscreen MacBook Pro would represent one of the most consequential changes to the Mac in more than a decade. Apple has consistently positioned the iPad as its touch-first computer, while the Mac has remained a pointer-and-keyboard platform. Yet customer behavior has changed. Many users now instinctively reach for screens on laptops from other manufacturers, and creative professionals often work across iPads, iPhones, and Macs in the same workflow.

Adding touch to the MacBook Pro would not necessarily mean abandoning the traditional Mac experience. Instead, it could create a hybrid input model: trackpad and keyboard for precision tasks, touch for quick adjustments, timeline scrubbing, color grading, and direct manipulation of images or audio. For video editors, a touchscreen could make it faster to trim clips, move assets, and review footage. For photographers, it could allow more natural retouching and culling. For music producers, it could turn the display into a flexible control surface for synthesizers, mixers, and samplers.

The rumored OLED display would further strengthen that creative focus. OLED technology offers per-pixel lighting, which means true blacks, high contrast, and precise control over brightness. That matters for HDR video editing, color-critical photo work, and any task where black levels and shadow detail are important. OLED can also enable thinner, lighter designs, which aligns with the report that the new MacBook Pro models will be significantly lighter than the current generation.

The addition of a Dynamic Island would bring another familiar iPhone feature to the Mac. On the iPhone, the Dynamic Island turns the camera cutout into an interactive area for notifications, media controls, and live activities. On a MacBook Pro, it could serve as a hub for system status, now-playing information, timers, file transfers, and other background tasks. It would also signal that Apple is continuing to unify design language across its platforms, even as each device retains its own input paradigm.

M5 Pro and M5 Max: Powering the Next Pro Workflow

The high-end MacBook Pro models are expected to use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Apple's Pro and Max silicon tiers are designed for users who need sustained performance across CPU, GPU, and media engines. Video editors benefit from hardware-accelerated encoding and decoding, while 3D artists, developers, and audio engineers rely on high memory bandwidth and efficient multi-core performance.

If the report is correct, the M5 Pro and M5 Max will be paired with the new OLED displays and touch input. That combination could make the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro the most
