The case is a worrying development for Indians. The execution of an Indian woman, Shahzadi Khan, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has sparked much debate. It has raised questions about the rights of Indians abroad, the judiciary, and government interference.

Case details
Shahzadi Khan, a 30-year-old woman from Janda district of Uttar Pradesh, had gone to Abu Dhabi in December 2021 in search of work. She worked in the household of a couple named Faiz-Nadia. In August 2022, a son was born to the family, and Khan was responsible for taking care of the child. However, on December 7, 2022, the boy died after receiving routine vaccinations. Following this incident, the boy’s parents filed a complaint against Shahzadi Khan and filed a police complaint. She was arrested. The Abu Dhabi court that tried the case conducted a trial and sentenced Khan to death on February 28, 2023. Her family, especially her father, Shabbir Khan, made several requests to the Indian government. However, according to UAE laws, it is difficult to bring about changes in the country’s judicial system.
Efforts by the Indian government
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs took up the case and made efforts to save her life. However, the government's efforts failed due to the strict laws in the UAE.She was officially notified of her execution on February 15.. However, before the execution, the prison authorities asked her for her last wish. When she asked to speak to her parents, the prison authorities allowed her to talk to her family on the phone. She burst into tears, telling her parents that she had done nothing wrong. After that, the prison authorities carried out the sentence.
Questions on the safety of Indians
The incident has raised several questions about the safety, legal aid and protection provided by the government to Indian migrants. Experts believe that more planned measures are needed to address the problems faced by Indians in other countries. The Indian government is yet to respond to this incident. Experts suggest that Indians need to take foreign laws more seriously. To learn more about the same issue, it is necessary to observe the actions taken by other international organizations. What steps are international human rights organizations taking on this issue? How should the Indian government deal with such incidents in the future? Can special legal aid provisions be brought for Indian migrants? The Indian government should also take this issue as a top priority and work to provide stronger protection to migrants.
