UFC 329 : de quand date le dernier combat de Conor MCGregor qui fait son retour dans l'octogone samedi contre Max Holloway ?

This Saturday, July 11, 2026, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Las Vegas with a massive card headlined by a long-awaited rematch. UFC 329 will feature Conor McGregor, the Irish icon known as "The Notorious," stepping back into the Octagon for the first time in five years. His opponent is Max Holloway, a former featherweight champion and one of the most durable fighters in the sport's history. The event, taking place at the T-Mobile Arena, has generated immense buzz among MMA fans worldwide.

McGregor, now 37 years old, has not fought since July 10, 2021, when he faced Dustin Poirier in a trilogy bout at UFC 264. That fight ended in disaster for the Irishman. In the closing seconds of the first round, McGregor threw a punch and landed awkwardly, breaking his left tibia and fibula. The injury was gruesome, and the bout was stopped by the doctor after the round, giving Poirier a TKO victory. It was a devastating end to a rivalry that had seen each man win once before. McGregor had knocked out Poirier in 2014, while Poirier exacted revenge with a TKO in January 2021 at UFC 257.

Before the Poirier trilogy, McGregor had taken a long hiatus from the sport. After winning the lightweight title by knocking out Eddie Alvarez in 2016, he became the first fighter in UFC history to hold belts in two weight classes simultaneously. However, he then stepped away from MMA to pursue a lucrative boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in August 2017. Despite losing by 10th-round TKO, McGregor earned an estimated $100 million. He returned to the Octagon in October 2018, challenging Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title, but lost by submission in the fourth round.

Following the Khabib loss, McGregor fought only once more before the Poirier trilogy — a 40-second knockout of Donald Cerrone in January 2020 at UFC 246. That win marked his first since 2016, but then came the losses to Poirier and the broken leg. Since that night in July 2021, McGregor has been on the sidelines, recovering from the injury and dealing with various legal and personal issues. He has also been filming a role in the remake of "Road House" and staying active on social media, but fans have been clamoring for his return.

Now, at UFC 329, he faces a familiar foe in Max Holloway. The two first met in August 2013, early in both their careers. McGregor won a unanimous decision in a featherweight bout that aired on UFC Fight Pass. At that time, Holloway was a promising prospect with a 7-1 record, while McGregor was an undefeated (13-0) newcomer from Ireland. The fight was competitive, with McGregor landing cleaner shots and using his reach advantage. Holloway, however, showed his legendary chin even then, absorbing heavy shots and continuing to press forward.

Since that first meeting, both fighters have taken vastly different paths. Holloway went on a historic 13-fight winning streak, capturing the interim featherweight title and then the undisputed belt by defeating Jose Aldo in 2017. He defended his title three times, including a memorable win over Brian Ortega and a rematch victory against Aldo. He also moved up to lightweight for a bout with Dustin Poirier in 2019, which he lost by decision. After losing the featherweight title to Alexander Volkanovski in 2019 and again in a rematch, Holloway has remained a top contender, recently defeating Arnold Allen and Calvin Kattar. Known for his incredible volume striking, cardio, and toughness, Holloway has never been knocked out in his career, despite fighting some of the hardest hitters in the sport.

McGregor, on the other hand, has experienced a more turbulent career. After defeating Holloway, he knocked out Dustin Poirier, then destroyed Diego Brandao, Dennis Siver, and Chad Mendes before knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to win the featherweight title. He then moved to lightweight and knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become a two-division champion. But his momentum was halted by Mayweather, Khabib, and the losses to Poirier. Now, at 37, he is considered past his prime by many, but he still possesses devastating knockout power in his left hand.

The question on everyone's mind is whether McGregor can still compete at the highest level after such a long layoff and a serious leg injury. He has bulked up significantly since his earlier career, looking like a welterweight or even light heavyweight in recent photos. His weight will be a factor; the fight with Holloway is at lightweight (155 pounds), but McGregor has often struggled with weight cuts. He may have to drain down to 155, which could affect his stamina. Holloway, meanwhile, has primarily competed at featherweight (145 pounds) but has fought successfully at lightweight before. This is Holloway's first fight since 2024, though he has stayed active.

The stakes for both men are high. For McGregor, a win would instantly put him back in the title conversation and set up potential super fights with the current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, or even a money bout with a boxer like Jake Paul. A loss could signal the end of his MMA career. For Holloway, a victory over the biggest star in UFC history would be a massive addition to his legacy and likely earn him another title shot. He is ranked number one in the featherweight division, but a win here could move him to lightweight.

Fans are also curious about McGregor's demeanor and mindset. He has been relatively quiet in the lead-up compared to his usual trash-talking. Some see this as a sign of maturity; others think he is no longer the same fiery competitor. Holloway, by contrast, has been respectful but confident, reminding everyone that he has only improved since their first fight.

From a technical standpoint, the matchup is fascinating. Holloway is a volume striker who throws combinations and mixes in kicks, while McGregor is a counterpuncher looking for one big shot. McGregor's best chance is to land the left hand early, especially since Holloway has a history of taking damage to the face. However, Holloway's durability and pace could overwhelm McGregor if the fight goes into deep waters. McGregor has historically faded in the later rounds, while Holloway gets stronger as the fight goes on. If McGregor can't get the knockout in the first two rounds, he may be in trouble.

The fight is also significant for the UFC. With the sport growing globally, the return of its biggest star is a huge promotional opportunity. UFC 329 is expected to break pay-per-view records, and the event is sold out. The co-main event features a women's strawweight title fight between champion Zhang Weili and challenger Yan Xiaonan, and there are several other intriguing bouts on the card.

McGregor's last fight was July 10, 2021, which means his layoff is a little over five years. That's one of the longest breaks in MMA history for a top fighter, especially outside of retirement. For comparison, Georges St-Pierre took a four-year hiatus before returning in 2017, and he won the middleweight title. But St-Pierre was not coming off a severe leg injury. McGregor has stated in interviews that his leg has fully healed and that he feels stronger than ever. He has been sparring and training at his home gym in Ireland and also at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas.

Regardless of the outcome, Saturday's event is a defining moment for both men. For McGregor, it's a chance to prove that he can still perform at the elite level and write a new chapter in his storied career. For Holloway, it's an opportunity to remind the world that he is one of the greatest featherweights of all time and to secure a signature win over a legend. The MMA world will be watching closely as these two warriors step into the cage once again, five years after their first encounter.
